THE GFCI CONTINUALLY TRIPS
This is a common symptom of several possible problems. To correctly diagnose the problem, you will need to collect more information. A GFCI breaker that trips can indicate an electrical service problem, water contamination in the unit and/or cord, bad breaker, incorrect control panel wiring, motor problems, etc. Try to answer these questions: How long does it take to trip the breaker? Does it always take the same amount of time to trip? How many times has it tripped? Have there been any electrical problems in the area recently?
GFCI BREAKER TRIPS RANDOMLY AND SPORADICALLY
These are referred to as Nuisance Trips. They can occur when the unit is installed a great distance from the electric service. Nuisance tripping can be caused by induced current in the ground wire or a base voltage difference due to soil pH levels. To resolve the problem, install a local grounding rod near the Control Panel and wire it into the Control Panel. This will eliminate the induced current and any base voltage differences. Adding cord beyond that originally provided with your Kasco unit could also cause nuisance trips; adding cord will also void the warranty and ETL listing and can cause malfunctions with the GFCI breaker. Other causes of nuisance tripping can come from equipment that operates in the area of the control panel. Such as: irrigation pumps and valves, well pumps, outdoor landscape lighting.
NEW UNIT / CONTROL PANEL NOT OPERATING
This problem is usually caused by improper installation or improper supply voltage. Verify the unit is assembled correctly. Then have your electrician verify the control panel is installed with correct wiring and supply voltage. Our 240-volt panels will require 4 incoming feed wires. (L1, L2, Neutral, Ground) refer to troubleshooting flow charts or contact Kasco for further support.
LIGHTS HOOKED UP BUT NOT WORKING
This could be a problem with the light kit, the control panel’s photo-eye or light timer. With the fountain running, you will need to verify power is present at the light outlet or wire terminals in your control panel. This can be done by covering the photo with black electrical tape or a rag. Plug a test light or radio into the light outlet. For panels with two timers: turn the light timer to ON. Use a voltmeter to check for voltage on wire terminals. The voltage will be 120V AC. If your test light/radio or voltmeter tests properly, you will need to inspect the light kit for bad bulbs or other damage to the light kit. If the test light/radio does not work or voltmeter does not display the correct voltage, you will need to troubleshoot the control panel for a defective photo eye or timer.
WATER FLOW FROM EQUIPMENT SEEMS TO BE LESS THAN USUAL AND/OR FLUCTUATES
This can occur for a few different reasons. Most of the time, this symptom is caused by the Bottom Screen on the unit being clogged. A mat of weeds, leaves, plastic bags, etc. can clog up the screen and cause the unit to be starved for water. If the unit does not have the proper amount of water, the flow or pattern will fluctuate up and down and look sporadic. If you are seeing these symptoms, unplug the unit and clean away the debris that is clogging the screen. Another possibility is the unit is not sitting correctly in the float. Unplug the unit and double-check how the unit is sitting in the float. A broken or chipped prop causing the unit to wobble and not pump properly is another possibility. When the unit is unplugged, check the prop for any damage and replace if damage is found.
EQUIPMENT SEEMS TO RUN SLOWLY
This can also be a symptom of several possible problems. There could be an electrical problem where the unit is not getting the proper voltage. This could also indicate a problem with the motor of the unit, which needs to be looked at by an Authorized Repair Center. Check that the unit is receiving the proper voltage, and, if so, contact Kasco for further steps.
EQUIPMENT HUMS AT START-UP BUT DOES NOT RUN; SPINNING PROP WITH A STICK STARTS UNIT
This indicates a problem with the Starting Capacitor. Each unit is equipped with a Starting Capacitor to get the unit going when it is first plugged in. If it is operating, but not spinning and can be started by spinning the prop with a stick, the Starting Capacitor needs to be replaced by an Authorized Repair Center.
EQUIPMENT TURNS ITSELF ON AND OFF INDEPENDENTLY OF A TIMER AND DOES NOT TRIP THE GFCI
Kasco equipment has Thermal Overloads built in that will turn the unit off if it overheats. Once the unit has cooled down, it will start back up. If you are noticing these symptoms, the unit should be unplugged right away because the Thermal Overload will continue to turn on and off until it burns out which could result in motor damage. Unplug the unit and take out of the water to find the cause of the problem. The problem could be one of many, such as low water, build-up on the unit preventing heat dissipation, something inhibiting the free rotation of the shaft, etc. If something is caught in the unit or there is a build-up on the unit, remove the debris and, if caught early enough, the unit should be fine. Contact a Kasco representative before restarting the unit.
THE INSIDE OF THE CONTROL BOX IS BLACKENED
Kasco 240volt control panels have built-in Surge Protection. A lightning strike has likely occurred near your equipment or control box. The surge protector is likely burned-out and needs to be replaced. The GFCI breaker should be also checked for damage and replaced if not functioning properly. Check the wiring for any damage as well. The smoke residue in the box can be cleaned up. Once the components are inspected and replaced, test the system to ensure the controls function properly.
NOTE: Surge Protectors are designed to dissipate most of the energy from a non-direct hit; nothing can protect from a direct lightning hit.
