A Macro-Zyme Case Study

Location: Seoul, South Korea

Application: Golf Course Pond

Details: 1.09 acres in size, 6’ average depth, long and narrow oval

Kukje Pond

Overview:

This golf course pond had excessive nutrient load from years of fertilizing the course.  Extensive algae growth followed which was unsightly and led to poor water quality & foul odors.

Solutions:

Robust-Aire was installed in the pond to improve water flow and oxygen levels, along with maintaining a more uniform distribution of oxygen and temperatures throughout the pond.  Macro-Zyme™ was also used as a regular pond treatment to more rapidly remove organics and nutrients from the water.

Macro-Zyme™ Treatment Dates:

  • September 3, 2014
  • Octonber 2, 2014
  • May 13, 2015
  • June 4, 2015
  • June 24, 2015
  • July 14, 2015

Water Sample Results for N & P

  • September 3, 2014 – prior to first Macro-Zyme™ Treatment
    • N – 4.658 mg/l
    • P – 0.279 mg/l
  • November 7, 2014 – after 2 treatments of Macro-Zyme™
    • N – 1.286 mg/l
    • P – 0.138 mg/l
  • June 24, 2015 – after 6th treatment of Macro-Zyme™
    • N – undetectable
    • P – 0.067 mg/l

Results:

With Macro-Zyme™ and Robust-Aire, the pond water quality, clarity, and smell improved.  Nitrogen levels become undetectable and Phosphorus levels dropped over 400% to 0.067 mg/l.  This drop in N & P directly lead to a dramatic decrease in algae growth, thus improving the pond appearance.

Kukje Pond Before and After

Impact:

Phosphorus, specifically, is the limiting nutrient for algae growth.  1 lbs. of Phosphorus in a pond can support 500 lbs. of algae growth.  With a ½ acre pond and an average depth of 6’, prior to any aeration or Macro-Zyme™ treatments, this pond was capable of supporting 755 lbs. of algae growth with its 1.51 lbs. of Phosphorus (pond volume x 0.279 mg/l P).

After 6 treatments of Macro-Zyme™, coupled with aeration, this pond could now support only 182 lbs. of algae with its .364 lbs. of Phosphorus (pond volume x 0.067 mg/l).
