Hopefully you’ve pulled your Kasco fountain or surface aerator from your pond for the winter by now, but if not, here’s why it’s so important and some of our best winter maintenance tips!

If you live in the northern climate where you get more than an inch or so of ice on your pond, its best to completely remove your floating fountain or aerator from the water for the duration of winter.

Otherwise, water thrown into the air during the cold winter months can freeze by the time it comes back down, causing ice build-up and possibly sinking or damaging the motor unit. If a unit is simply turned off and left in the water, the constant contraction/expansion of ice could crack or damage the float.

A couple things to consider when you pull your unit for the winter:

• Store it somewhere above freezing.
• Store the unit upside down – nozzle or prop end down, can side up. This will keep oil on the seals and will help them not dry out when not in use.

This is also a good time to send in your unit for a seal and oil replacement, as we recommend having the seals and oil replaced every 3-5 years to keep it running at its best.  Changing the seals and oil helps prolong life and gets the unit updated if we’ve made any changes since the last time it was serviced.

By following these steps you’ll have many years of enjoyment of your floating fountain or aerator.
