We get asked this question all the time, “Are your 120V or 240V motor units more efficient and which is cheaper to operate?” Let’s address the question on which is more efficient. The performance of our 120V and 240V motors are identical. Our ¾ and 1hp units are available in 120V or 240V and the pattern size is the same for either option and there is no difference in the efficiency of either motor. If you already have 120V power available, go with that. If you already have 240V power, go with that. The patterns will be the same with either option.
The next question of which is cheaper to run is also one we get daily. The simple answer to that is that they are almost the same cost to operate or are just within a few dollars. Most people think that 240V is cheaper because it uses half the amps that 120V uses. Amps isn’t what consumers pay for, it’s actually the wattage used by the electrical device.
Let’s look at what the 3/4HP J Series would cost to run. Keep in mind that what you pay is based on watts. To determine watts, we have to multiply the voltage by the amperage. The 120V 3/4HP J unit pulls 7.3 amps at 120V so the wattage is 876 watts. The 240V 3/4HP J unit pulls 3.65 amps at 240V so the wattage is 876 watts. The wattage is the same for both 120V and 240V, so the cost to run them would also be the same.
To find out how much a certain unit would cost to run, we have an electrical cost calculator on our website that allows you to plug in information such as hours a unit will run per day and your local kw hour cost (the default is .10). This calculator will give you a good idea of your monthly electrical bill for any of the units we sell.
Kasco prides itself on manufacturing units that have the lowest cost of ownership, meaning less money for you in the long run. Part of this is making sure that our units are efficient to operate on a monthly basis and not breaking your budget. That’s why we offer our units as 120V and 240V to ensure they fit easily within your application.
