Do I need a Thermostat for my De-icer?

When it comes to de-icing, one of the most common questions we receive is, “Do I need a thermostat to operate my De-icer?” The short answer is no, a thermostat is not required. Kasco De-icers were designed and engineered to safely run 24/7 as long as they are fully submerged.  For some customers, especially those with remote properties that are not regularly visited, continuous operation provides added peace of mind knowing their De-icer is always working to protect docks, boats, and waterfront equipment. Likewise, in colder northern climates with prolonged freezing temperatures, many users prefer around-the-clock operation to keep up with the harsh winter conditions.

On the other hand, for many customers, a thermostat is certainly worth considering. If winter temperatures often rise above freezing during the day and drop below freezing at night, Kasco’s C-10 thermostat can help reduce monthly operating costs. Operating cost varies by horsepower, so we offer an electrical cost calculator to get a better estimate here: https://kascomarine.com/tools/calculator/.

How Much Will I Save with a Thermostat?

When operated continuously, De-icers typically cost around $45–$75 per month, per unit. A thermostat can reduce that cost by running the De-icer only when temperatures fall below your set point. The C-10 features an adjustable dial from 0–80°F, allowing you to choose a set point that best fits your specific application. When the air temperature drops below that, the De-icer turns on and remains on until the air warms a few degrees above the set point. Because of this, the C-10 reduces monthly operating costs by 25-50% and will by pay for itself in the first winter.

Recommended starting settings:
• Freshwater: 30-32°F
• Salt or brackish water: 26-28°F

Since winter conditions vary, routine monitoring is recommended. Adjust the setting as needed if you find the ice-free area is larger or smaller than desired.

Is There a Warranty?

The C-10 includes a 2-year warranty and is for use with 120V De-icers only. It features a piggyback plug: the De-icer’s power cord plugs into the back of the C-10, and the C-10 plugs into a 120V, GFCI-protected outlet.

The Kasco C-10 thermostat is a simple way to protect your waterfront property while keeping operating costs minimal. If you have any questions, please email support@kascomarine.comoder rufen Sie 715-262-4488 an.
