With the changing of the leaves, it’s time to think about removing your Kasco fountains and surface aerators for the winter. This is also the ideal time to do some basic, routine maintenance. The following steps should be taken to ensure you get the most out of your unit.

Routine Cleaning

Cleaning your unit is one of the most essential maintenance items and is very easy to do when the unit is first removed from the water rather than letting the material dry. When wet, it usually only takes a scrub brush and some elbow grease to remove any organic or mineral deposits from the motor housing, float, and prop/fountain housing area. For stubborn deposits, you may need to use a pressure washer or a cleaning product like Rydlime. Rydlime is a biodegradable descaling solution.

Keeping the unit clean is critical for proper cooling as well as ensuring a long lifespan.

Check the Sacrificial Anode

Another maintenance step is checking the sacrificial anode. This anode protects the unit from corrosion. When it reaches roughly 1/2 the original size and/or is visibly corroded, it is time to replace it.

The anode can be found just below the prop on all Kasco units. A 9/64” long handled Allen wrench should be used to loosen the screws in the anode. The prop may be removed for better access. Once the anode is removed, simply reinstall the new one and tighten on the shaft.

For newer units that have a flinger disc, be careful not to move the disc as spacing is precise. In this case, tighten the anode directly above the flinger so they are touching. For older style units, place the anode roughly 1/8 in. above the motor top.

Check the Power Cord

After the unit is unplugged and removed from the water, inspect the power cord for damage from other equipment and/or wildlife. If there is any visible damage to the insulation, we recommend replacing the cord.

Replace Seal, Oil and Bearings

Finally, every 3 years of service, we recommend changing the seal, oil and bearing on the unit. This can be done at Kasco or at an Authorized Service Center. You can email support@kascomarine.com for your nearest service center or you can send the unit directly to Kasco by filling out and including the repair form.

After maintenance is complete, bring the unit indoors and store upside down to ensure good oil/seal contact to prevent it from drying. Storage areas do not need to be room temperature, but it is suggested to keep it stored in above freezing conditions. Following these maintenance instructions will save you time next spring and ensure another year of great service and reliability.
